A new cast member has just been added to the famous circus Cirque du Soleil, and she is just an art student. Yang Shu-ching, a master’s candidate in Fo Guang University’s Graduate Institute of Art Studies, just won a one year contract with the performing troupe, the first ever Taiwan female to be recruited into the Canadian circus. Yang is a part time instructor at the Chinese Culture University’s Department of Theater Arts and began studying Peking Opera when she just only ten years old and soon learned to master the maomadan, or young female warrior role, that emphasizes singing and dancing. Yang also studied Taiwanese Opera and modern dance growing up.
Yang earned her spot among 30 other young stars who auditioned for a role in the circus when they came in 2006 announcing their need to recruit a performer with a background in Peking Opera. A final round consisted of a grueling ten hour process when the remaining 20 contestants performed dances of their own choice, designated acts, martial arts moves with a partner and improvisation. “The competition was tense and you got to face fewer contestants once you passed a round of the tests,” Yang said to Taiwan News. “I silently screamed in joy when I learned I had emerged as the only woman among seven finalists.” This Sunday she will fly to Canada to sign a contract and begin preparation for her January 2009 Las Vegas performances.
